    Hello,

    My name is Renaud.
I want to use Geexbox on an old pc (Acer Travelmate 4200).

The problem is that i can’t connect on my wifi network.

It’s seems that the wirlesscard is off/not installed.
At boot, the wirlesscard’s light is on but when i’m on geexbox the light is off.

I use Slax with this pc but i had to follow those instruction to make the wifi work:

    Copy iwlwifi-395-2.ucode in /lib/firmware
    Open terminal and type:
iwlwifi -r modprobe && iwlwifi modprobe
    reboot
    Changes are persistent

Geexbox is different (directories are different, there is no persistent changes) and i can’t use this method.
I’m a noob ^^ and i need some help from an expert :p.

What kind of information do you need?

    Raguetr

    i found this too: iwlwifi-3945-ucode_15.32.2.9-1_i686.opk

i try to install it but it tells me (summary):

The file wich is tried to be install is already present in check_data_files_clashes firmware-wifi-intel-pw3945

    i use this commande: iwconfig
    result:
    wlan0
    ieee 802.11abg essid:off/any
    mode:managed Access Point: not-assigned tx-power:off
    retry long limit:7 rts thr:off fragment thr:off
    encryption key:off
    power management:on

    lo no wireless

    eth0 no wireless

    what must i do?

I saw that power management is on, does that mean the wireless is on?
Should i verify that the wifi ssid key etc ?

Your wifi card seems detected. Now check your config file (/etc/network)
edit it, and verify all your setup ( PSK for wpa2 access, etc)

    thank you for your response

    i made a mistake using lan option…
    The right option is wlan
    the wifi is now working.

I’ve got another problem now, i run geexbox from a usb key and changes are not persistent.
Is there a file that i can edit to enter my essid, key, …
The purpose is that the wifi is automatically connected at boot.

    Another question, i download samba-server_3.5.10-1_armv7.opk
is there a way to configure it editing file on the usb key
The purpose is that the smbserver is up and running at boot.

    hum, you should create a casper-rw file : look here : http://www.geexbox.org/documentation/create-or-modify-a-persistent-file/

    Another question, i download samba-server_3.5.10-1_armv7.opk

what is your arch ? with your travelmate, isn’it i386 or x86_64, is it ? armv7 is for arm device, not compatible with yours.

If you use i386, please have a look at devel snapshots : http://download.geexbox.org/snapshots/
    and install packages from there.

    THX for your response.

i read this http://www.geexbox.org/documentation/create-or-modify-a-persistent-file/ but i don’t understood how geexbox will know that it has to save changes in this casper folder?

My purpose is to have geexbox with wifi and samba server running.

    How can i do that?

Persitent changes is not important if i can run a script at boot.

Can i run a script at boot to configure wifi and samba sever automatically?

    Regards,

    Renaud

if casper-rw file is present on your usb stik, geexbox uses it else it continues to boot without it.
    it’s autodetected at boot time.
you can see that looking at this file : http://hg.openbricks.org/openbricks/file/3a1090115009/packages/busybox-init/scripts/linuxrc

    Thank you.

    I’ve got now persistent changes.

    I use geexbox-devel-20130923-r16406-i386.iso

I check start samba server at boot.

But i don’t find the file /etc/smb.conf to configure samba server.

Could you tell me where i should have a look? (link?)

    Regards,

    Renaud

    # opkg info samba-server
    version 3.5.10-1
depends: eglibc, libsmclient, zlib, gnutls, talloc
    Provides:
    status: install prefer, user not-installed
    Architecture: i686

    # systemctl status smbd
    smbd.service
loaded : not-found (reason: no such file or directory)
    active: inactive (dead)

    #

    What does that mean?

    opkg update

    opkg remove samba-server

    opkg install samba-server

    smb.conf is present

    status: install prefer, user not-installed

    so it’s not installed

by default, it’s not installed on devel (nor release), only the client

    grep samba config/defconfigs/geexbox-xbmc-i386-generic.conf
    CONFIG_PKG_samba-client=y
    CONFIG_PKG_samba-server=m

if you find another, please open a new topic.
