I tried running GeeXBox (downloaded a couple of days ago) from a USB drive and it was extremely slow. Then I booted it from a vacant ext3 partition, but it wasn’t any better. The mouse cursor moves every 2 seconds or so. It takes an equally long time to respond to a key press. My hardware:

Asus M4A785TD-M Evo
Phenom II X4 925 (overclocked)
2x2GB DDR3
Radeon 5770 (overclocked)
WD Caviar Blue 500GB (+ Vertex 2 for Windows 7 x64)
Logitech diNovo keyboard and M115 mouse connected via powered USB extension cable

It took some trying to get it to boot. If it makes any difference, I use this (Grub2, edited via Xubuntu):

menuentry “GeeXBox” {
set root=(sdb,msdos9)
insmod ext3
search -no-floppy -fs-uuid -set UUIDHERE (don’t remember it and can’t check it under Windows)
linux /GEEXBOX/vmlinuz root=UUIDHERE vga=789 quiet splash
initrd /GEEXBOX/initrd
}

It said something like “vga=789 is deprecated” (gotta remove it), but started anyway.

I’ve just boot on a Live-CD burned on USB Key with XBMC 10.1 ISO.
I’ve haven’t with lagging.
So I think problem isn’t not with hardware or XBMC graphical interface.
Maybe with GPU driver embeded in GeexBoX.

Encoutering the same problem, I tried to use te extra package.
First, seems it doesnt fit the version (i run the 64-bits), and then I tried it – nothing to loose – but it doesnt work. Actually, it took me nearly ten minutes to write the name of the file to exe it, cause of “laggs”.

Config :
64 bits ; 2*2Go ; AMD 2core 2.2 GHz ; ATI Radeon M. 4570

Has built-in ability to provide new AMD graphics drivers “rootfs”? In order to solve the software performance on AMD HD graphics.

a quick look :
linux-firmware-r13f5008494/radeon/JUNIPER_pfp.bin
install http://download.geexbox.org/releases/extra/i386/radeon-firmware_r13f5008494-1_i686.opk
By the way, we really need to add this to next release

Hey! i’m in the same boat. HD 4650 here. I install the flgrx driver & after reboot I get an error message that it can’t open the framebuffer & directory not found.
If I try ot install the firmware it tells me it’s allready installed.

I’m not too cut up though i’ve yet to get this card stable on any linux distro. I got an Nvidia 8400GS i’ll throw in for testing. I really wanted sound over HDMI but i’ll just order a G220 soon.

http://download.geexbox.org/releases/extra/i386/geexbox-devel-20111026-r13362-i386.iso
http://download.geexbox.org/releases/extra/i386/geexbox-devel-20111027-r13370-i386.iso

These two versions of the platform in my normal speed.
Can play RMVB files, but fluency is not enough.
Play Blu-ray ISO files directly, but the lack of clarity.
Not shut down the system.

I wish the software better and better!
