Recently I’ve been trying to build a media PC for my front room using Geexbox. I’m using an old Shuttle XPC I managed to source very cheaply. I’m running,

Shuttle XPC SN41G2 Version 3 AMD Socket A
Radeon 9800
512mb of RAM
Athlon 1gig processor

As you can see, it’s quite old.

Anyway, I downloaded the Geexbox ISO earlier today, put it on a USB using UNetBootIn and have it running on the Shuttle. However, from the main menu, if I select “videos”, this happens:

>> The screen flickers
>> The GeexBox logo appears
>> I’m returned to the main menu

This also happens if I select “pictures”, for example – though I can get into the System Settings menu.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on here? I don’t really know a great deal about Linux so I’ve no idea what’s going on.

Try this :
swith to vt2 (see documentation)
rm -R /root/.xbmc
switch to vt4

Does it solve your problem ?

Terribly sorry, but can you explain that in layman’s terms? Or provide a link to the documentation you mention?

It’s this bit I didn’t really get:

rm -R /root/.xbmc

Sorry, as I said, I’ve used Linux very little. I assume this is a command for a terminal/console window? And I switch to VT4 in the same way I switched to VT2?

sorry :
switch to vt2 : press CTRL+ALT+F2
login : root
password : root
write follow by enter : rm -R /root/.xbmc
switch to vt4 : press CTRL+ALT+F4
test if it changes something

ShuttleBuilder – I am a layman like you. And I have very old machines, too.
So, I would recomend you use the old releases of geexbox, as the new ones will not work.

Try the geexbox-1.2.4-en.i386.glibc.iso:

Hi, thanks Tomlohave – I can open up the Video section now.

New problem though; I put some videos on a USB to test out playing them; however, they don’t show up in the video filebrowser – the USB stick itself DOES show up, just the browser states that there are zero files on it. I put a few on, mainly MKV’s – doesn’t GeexBox support this format?

add a new video path in videos : /.root
your video are here (yes we should add this to documentation)

Sorry, how do I do that? (I apologise, I’m not actually in front of the machine right now – this is for when I get home from work)

on xbmc, from videos menu —> add new source

Just had a look, and I’ve realised that GeexBox can’t see the USB stick I’m plugging in that has the video files on. I tried addint /.root as a new source, and now I can browse some folders fine (which I believe are on the OS’s USB stick) but I can’t find the SECOND USB stick that has my video files on. Anyone know what’s going on here? Do I have to “mount” it or something?

look in default in videos.

It’s not there. That’s what I meant initially. The default locations it lists are the USB stick with the OS on, and the blank hard disk inside the machine.

Just had a thought; the USB stick I’ve got the video files on was formatted in Windows XP. That a problem?
