I’ve been looking to use GeeXboX as an alternative to MythTV, since it’s got a more “wife-friendly” interface (at least for my particular wife). And the PVR in ver 3.0 would make a GeeXboX HTPC a good solution for our family.
But, I have a problem with DVD playback in GeeXboX 3.0: it’s very choppy when there’s a lot of motion. The frame rate can get annoyingly slow. For instance, at the very beginning of newer Disney DVDs, there’s a clip with clouds, fireworks, landscape and Cinderella’s castle. The pan across the clouds slows down to maybe 4 or 5 fps, with some lesser jerkiness in the waving flag and bursting fireworks.
This wasn’t a problem with ver. 2.0, although picture quality wasn’t as good. It also looks OK on XBMCbuntu. Video at 1280×720 is also 50,51 or 52Hz, 60Hz isn’t an option in 3.0 on my system.
My system is a fairly boring dual-core AMD BE-2350, 4G of RAM with Nvida GeForce 8500 GT PCI Express x16 video card connected to an LCD TV through a DVI-HDMI adapter. I’m not trying to do anything in the background yet.
XBMCbuntu 11.0 System Info reports OpenGL vendor: Nvidia, OpenGL ver 3.3.0 NVIDIA 280.13, resolution 1280×720@60Hz.
GeeXbox 3.0: System Info: OpenG:L Vendor: nouveau, version: 2.1 mesa 8.0.3 (and video hardware is identified as “Gallium”)
GeeXbox 2.0: OpenGL vendor: Nvidia, OpenGL ver 3.3.0 NVIDIA 280.13, resolution 1280×720@50Hz
I can’t help but think the video driver difference is the problem, but I’m not really sure what to change.
The /etc/video shows:
# Enable Xorg non-free binary drivers if they are installed
BINARY_DRIVERS=yes
I assume that’s correct from what I’ve read in the documentation.
Thanks for any suggestions.
