Hi,

Since version 2.0 I am not able to see anything on my TV with the S-video output, just some flickering. Version 1.2.4 worked. Actually, both versions are installed and I select the old one from the boot menu while trying to make 2.0.x work…

My current setup is:
- ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700
- r14078 installed in my HDD following the steps of post http://www.geexbox.org/forum/topic/howto-install-it-in-hdd/page/3/#post-3188
- running “xrandr -props” shows that S-video output is configured as ntsc. Since I need pal, i run “xrand -output S-video -set “tv output” pal” but the TV screen is still flickering.

Any ideas?

Sorry, tomlohave, my mistake: it should read -set “tv standard” pal

Anyway:


# xrandr --output S-video --set tv_standard pal
X Error: BadName

But nothing changes…

Then:

But oh surprise: “opkg list” does not show xf86-video-fglrx after reboot. So this can be something tied to the ability of my installation to persist changes, I will check that first and then try again.

OK, persistence solved (stupid error: the “persistence=…” line was not in the same line of the “kernel=…” line; also, I had to use http://www.pendrivelinux.com/casper-rw-creator-make-a-persistent-file-from-windows/ instead of toporesizer to create the casper-rw file).

Anyway, this time when xf86-video-fglrx is downloaded and installed, when rebooting the system it is still there.

There is only a small difference: this time the computer panel (it is a laptop) is black, as if GeeXboX truly detected the S-video output and directed the video there. Unfortunately, the TV screen shows only horizontal flickering as before…

Setting the tv standard to pal is uneffective…

did you set up S-video mode ?
xrandr -addmode S-video 800×600
xrandr -output S-video -mode 800×600
xrandr -output S-video -set tv_standard pal

According to xrandr -props the S-video mode already exists. Anyway, I have run the commands as recommended (except for the last one, I have to put ‘xrandr -output S-video -set “tv standard” pal’ otherwise I get an error). But the TV does not show anything but a black image with horizontal flickering :(

The ATI drivers seem to be installed (opkg list shows “xf86-video-ati - 6.14.3-1″ installed. Do I need to do something else?

Thank you for the update, tomlohave.

The result is much better! But still…

Now, the TV does not flicker any more, and the green number my TV shows for the channel dissappears, I assume this means it is getting something understandable from the S-video input (even if the S-video output has “tv standard = ntsc”. However, neither the TV nor the laptop panel show any graphics, only a black background.

But…
- when GeexBox is booting for a few seconds some text is shown on the TV, until the time arrives when the GeexBox logo is shown, then the TV goes black
- VT1, VT2, VT3 are shown perfectly on the TV and the laptop panel simultaneously. VT4, i.e. the graphical interface is black in both the TV and the panel.
So, it seems any ASCII output is shown but graphics have problems.

Installing xf86-video-fglrx has improved a bit the visualization of the ASCII terminals on the TV (a small horizontal white line on the top of the image dissapeared) but it did not make the graphical interface appear.

I tried the xrandr -addmode sequence whithout result. I also tried to add more modes apart from the 800×600 (e.g. 1024×768, 640×480) but when selecting them for the S-video output xrandr returned errors.

Something strange to add: today there is the flickering again, no consoles on the TV neither.

Anyway, the output of xrandr -props:

You may notice the ntsc value of the “tv standard” parameter. Of course if I do a xrandr -output S-video -set “tv standard” pal the value changes accordingly, but the image does not improve…

can you post your Xorg.0.log file
(send me it in private if you want)

one test, does it work if you boot with only your S-video cable attached ?

xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1
but you need then xvattr which is not packaged
