Hi there,
GeeXboX runs very smooth on my system (booting from USB, used Unetbootin), there is just one small problem I just can’t figure out: I can’t get any sound over HDMI. Tried all combinations in the Audio output settings. Also tried deactivating on-board sound to be sure no other device is the cause.
I’m able to switch between the device options ‘Defaults’, ‘Custom’, iec958′ and ‘hdmi’. Disabled both ‘capable receiver’ options, which doesn’t help.
My linux knowledge is practically nonexistent (sorry about that ;( ), so any step-by-step instructions for solving the problem are much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

hi,
first, you need persistent data (see documentation)
switch to console (CTRL+ALT+F2)
login : root
password : root
execute :
vi /etc/audio
search the line with analogic, and replace by hdmi
(INS to enter text, then in order : execute the sequence : “ECHAP : w q” to save )
reboot

and use the latest devel iso : http://download.openbricks.org/r14192/

Thanks for your help.
I changed the line, but still no sound. I double-checked if the changes were really saved (which is the case).
Is it crucial to use the latest devel iso? I picked the 64-bit stable release to begin with. Or are there no important differences between i386 and x86_64 ?

|
forgot to say : you need xf86-video-nvidia
take the latest i386 iso for tests
X86_64 is undeer construct

Okay, so I used the latest i386 iso.
Since I didn’t know how to work the opk stuff, I found another thread in the forums (http://www.geexbox.org/forum/topic/nvidia-card/):
boot on geexbox
switch to vt2
cd /.root
opkg remove xf86-video-nvidia
opkg install –force-overwrite xf86-video-nvidia-legacy_173.14.30-1_i686.opk
reboot
But I get ‘No packages were removed’ message. I tried to simply ignore that and installed the ‘xf86-video-nvidia-legacy_173.14.31-1_i686.opk’
reboot command didn’t work somehow, so I rebooted manually. When then trying to start GeeXboX, I get the splash screen, then it stops at the console (login prompt).
I’m actually sure I’m doing something wrong Thanks for your patience!

for your card , you need the nvdidia classic drivers, not legacy, nor old., No need to remove them at first boot because the nvidia driver is not installed … so :
if you have access to internet, the fast way : assuming you use r14192 and persistent)
switch to vt2, then do
———-
opkg install http://download.openbricks.org/r14192/xf86-video-nvidia_295.40-1_i686.opk
reboot
———-
the edit /etc/audio

Thanks for pointing that out!
Don’t know why, but when I try to reboot after the opkg install, nothing really happens. For a very short moment there’s an error message I can’t actually make out, since it disappears very quick (something about ‘not able de/mount’..?), then the display is cleared, cursor blinking on top.
Manually rebooting after that and booting GeeXboX gives me the splashscreen, then the login prompt.
Internet access is available, r14192 used and persistent data.
