I’m so impressed with Geexbox (saved the day yesterday), was wondering if it can be installed as a standalone, primary, OS on a machine? Can it format the hard drive, update itself and run it’s own file server so that I can transfer my files to it from other Windows/Mac PCs? I’m assuming if it can a Samba server would be the ideal candidate. Other than that, don’t need anything fancy other than probably the “make” command and some help to set it up. |

Hi, You can try the latest devel iso : http://download.openbricks.org/ There is already a running ftp server (samba server as a separate package) |

Hi, Thanks for pointing me at the right direction. Do you have an i386 version of the SSH and Samba server? Suppose I can get away without having make if I can get precompiled packages. Last question, the only thing that wasn’t working from the liveCD yesterday was the network adapter. Any way I can troubleshoot it from the liveCD before I wipe Windows? Pun intended, they deserve it.

here for i386 : http://download.openbricks.org/samba-server_3.5.10-1_i686.opk but you need to solve your problem with network first (another solution is to copy *.opk in a hard disk or in usb stick) |

Wired. Windows say PCI Slot 5 but I think it’s an onboard chip. Realtek RTL8139/810x. Whole PC is a dinosaur, so I’ll be surprised if there’s anything on it not supported by the Kernel. |

Update: Just installed it, samba server works like a charm, so does the internet. There’s a couple of very minor issues, will try to iron them out myself and will get back to you if I can’t sort it. In the meantime, would really appreciate if you can set me an SSH i386 package to unhook the keyboard. |

Thank you, I’ll install it when I get home tonight. Apologies for not getting back to you earlier, think we might be a bit off sync with our time zones. Only a couple of snags would I’d like your thoughts on: 1.) Remote control: Can you recommend an IF remote for Geexbox? My Logitech Harmony is now set up as a Windows Media Center remote ( http://www.oneweb.co.uk/mythtv/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/mce-remote.jpg ) but it seems to be acting a bit funny. For example, when I press one time left it delays a bit and then executes the command two times. I thought I’d manage to fix it by changing the signal delays of the remote but didn’t have much success. 2.) While booting up I get the “Cant load framebuffer” error. Not a major problem as it still boots up but would be nice to sort it. 3.) Skin on devel appears to be different from LiveCD version. Assuming all will be ok if I copy the skin over? 4.) Are “geexbox-devel-20120218-r13970-i386.iso ” and “geexbox-devel-20120219-r13973-i386.iso” exactly the same ISOs? I can swear I downloaded r13973 but it says r13970 when I’m shutting the system down. Other than that, everything seems to be smooth like butter. |

Yo, I need to spend less hours at work I think. My timezone is GMT. Thanks for the SSH pack, works like a charm. The OS is playing a few tricks with http remote (system freezes) but I’m hoping I wont need that when I manage to fix the remote prob. I think we’re good to close this topic now, many thanks for your help again. Oh, one more thing, which file should I remove the VGA bit from? Couldn’t find it… |

Right, finally got some time to look into this issue. All is well apart from my remote. The “Back” button just refuses to work, it brings up the Power Menu whenever I use it. Everything else seems to be ok. Any ideas how to tackle this? From some (admittedly little) research I’ve done, it seems to be a problem with new MCE remotes? |
