Hi All,
I had install GeeXBox2 on ASRock computer. Here you can find . I tried all possible combinations in audio settings to enable HDMI sound. Unfortunatelly no success: sometimes I got sound initialization error, sometimes just a silnce (no error messages). What kind of info should I share with you that you can support me to find proper config?

Hi greg,

download this iso i386 or x86_64: http://download.geexbox.org/releases/2.0.1/, it corrects some problems with sound
use persistent (see documentation)
then access a pseudo terminal (see documentation)
edit the file /etc/audio
change SOUNDCARD_MODE variable to “hdmi”

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your answer. I did like you wrote but result is the same. I see know is space to configure two sound cards, but if I try to setup one as hdmi – no error but still silence.
I do not understand what is corelation between:
Audio output – HDMI
Audio output device – HDA NVidia hdmi or HDA NVidia Defaults or hdmi
Passthrough output device – HDA NVidia hdmi or HDA NVidia Defaults or hdmi

hi greg,
Well, I had the same problem as you did at first. The audio settings were very confusing, but I figured out how to enable audio through HDMI output. Set all the following options to HDMI as follows.
Audio Ouput – HDMI // I guess this is your audio output port
Audio Ouput Device – HDMI Nvida //This is your Video or Audio PCI card
Audio Passthrough – HDMI Nvida //This is for directing your audio signal through your PCI card
To everyone: Correct me if I am wrong.
This has been working for me.
I am running a BioStar system with 2.0 audio. So, no matter what audio configuration I set I only get 2.0 audio through my HDMI. I really don’t care though since I am watching TV with sound. That’s all it matters for now. :)

I am not going to roll my head over why Fedora 16 doesn’t output audio through HDMI. I will when I upgrade my motherboard with 5.1 audio. I feel GeeXBox is limited in what you can watch even though Youtube add-on gives you the option to watch whatever video is only available through Youtube website.

Thanks for your advice. Of course configuration you proposed looks the most logical. So I tried it – silence. This the case I have no error messages and no sound coming from my speakers.
Probably problem is somewhere deeper…
GeeXBox looks so great – anybody to help me with HDMI troubleshooting ?

It sounds like your audio might be muted by default. I know they say that on Federo 16, volume is muted when you first start the system. By using Alasmixer, they raise the volume and it works. Maybe that’s your issue with your system. Try that if you haven’t tried.

See this is one of the things about Linux, you have to almost always start the underlying process or program to make things work on Linux if its not started already. That is one of the reason why it is safe and secure unlike Windows which loads and runs every little things on the computer even the ones you will never you use. So, it becomes plug and play and unsecure and easy to find the system’s weakness and hack. ;)

ok, if you have installed this iso : http://download.openbricks.org/geexbox-devel-20120207-r13917-i386.iso
can you install this package too : http://download.openbricks.org/xf86-video-nvidia_285.05.09-1_i686.opk ?
For this, do : (you need a persistent file)
switch to virtual terminal 2 (see documentation)
execute :
wget http://download.openbricks.org/xf86-video-nvidia_285.05.09-1_i686.opk
opkg install xf86-video-nvidia
edit /etc/audio and replace SOUNDCARD_MODE=”analog” by SOUNDCARD_MODE=”hdmi”

reboot
you can test if sound is working by doing in a virtual terminal :
(pick a wav somewhere ….)
aplay -D plughw:1,3 your.wav
if nothing replace the “3″ by 7 or 8 or 9 and retest

Hello,
Finally HDMI sound is working!
Many thanks for help to Tom who spend lot of time to help me and to GeeXBoxLover – whose advise was a key to find solution.

Let’s start with hw I used – ASrock 3d Vision model 137D.

GeeXBox told me to check if my card is not muted.
I check it alsamixer and it looked ok BUT there are two sound cards and the one driving HDMI is not a default one.
So F6->Select sound card:
- default
1 HDA Intel
2 HDA NVidia
Good choice is “2″.
Then I found S/PDIF S/PDIF1 S/PDIF2 S/PDIF3 all were muted.
With “M” key I’ve changed this option.

Afterwards I was able to play WAV file using command line:
aplay -D plughw:1,7 wave.wav

Thanks to Tom’s advise I found this combination. But you can try many combinations to find proper audio output, plughw:X,Y (0,0-was my analog output). X-sound card Y-output nr

Last step was to setup similar config in GeeXBox GUI.
System -> System -> Aduio output
Audio Output: HDMI
Audio Output device: Custom -> plughw:1,7

And that is it.

Enjoy GeeXBox like I do!
